Bone Closing
Becoming a mother is a rite of passage. After experiencing pregnancy and birth, postpartum is the final stage of this rite of passage. The bone-closing ceremony serves to honor this journey and hold the new mother physically and emotionally. Beginning with pregnancy, the body starts to open and grow. Labor and birth are very profound forms of opening. The bone closing helps to close the mother’s body. The entire body receives the nurturing hug of the rebozo, a traditional cloth of many uses. This ceremony has origins in Mexico, but also in many other places around the world, including Russia and Morocco. The reason it is valued in many cultures is that we all share the same physiology and our needs postpartum are the same. Particular attention is given to the closing of the pelvis.
