Pediatric Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a test that allows the doctor to see your child's colon (large intestine) by using a scope with a light and camera built into it to take pictures. The scope is gently passed through the rectum into the lower intestine allowing the doctor to examine the lining of the colon. The test helps the doctor to see what is causing your child's pain. Other examples of why someone would need a colonoscopy would be to detect inflammation, identify the site of bleeding or take biopsies. The anesthesiologist will talk with you and your child regarding the medication given during the procedure. The endoscopy test takes approximately 40-45 minutes from the time your child goes to sleep and goes to recovery.
