In a time not too long ago and not very far away, 11-year-old Adam Goldberg (Sean Giambrone) is using his parents’ video camera to document life in 1980s suburbia. From his smothering but well-meaning mom Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) and hot-tempered dad Murray (Jeff Garlin), to his rebellious older sister Erica (Hayley Orrantia) and overly emotional brother Barry (Troy Gentile), he’s got plenty to work with. Plus there’s Pops (George Segal), a wild lothario of a grandfather who’s his mentor in the finer points of life. Driving lessons, first jobs, college applications, and making new friends while keeping the old are all part of the Goldberg family saga. Whether leaving childhood behind in search of a first kiss, coping with the trials of raising teenagers, or reliving youthful passions in the face of growing old, the Goldberg family experiences it all. Through thick and thin they are always there for each other.
